ADHD and ADD

It is possible that you have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity, known as ADHD or ADD. But at the same time, your problems may be the result of psychological exhaustion, anxiety or depression. The cornerstone of proper ADHD treatment is therefore accurate diagnosis.

Do you think you need help or at least want more clarity? Make an appointment for a no-obligation initial and diagnostic consultation or just give us a call, we will be happy to advise you and help you with everything. At our first meeting we will talk about your difficulties, find out the severity of your problems and the possible causes. We will suggest a course of action and, if necessary, select your personal therapist so that he/she not only meets your professional requirements, but also suits you humanly.

Diagnosis of ADHD and ADD

The likelihood of the presence of attention deficit disorder (both ADHD and ADD) can be determined in adults by a short diagnostic consultation consisting of a diagnostic interview and short diagnostic questionnaires. The second option, which has a high accuracy rate, is a comprehensive clinical-psychological examination, in which a formal diagnosis of ADHD/ADD can already be made. Multiple diagnostic tests are used to make the diagnosis, including a personality trait diagnosis and a neuropsychological battery.

The client will therefore also learn other facts about the personality structure or possible additional difficulties in the form of affective and anxiety disorders. This examination lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours and the client receives a detailed written report upon completion.

We diagnose ADHD and ADD in adults and children over 12 years of age. At the end of the abbreviated diagnosis and clinical-psychological examination, further treatment recommendations are made.

ADHD doesn't just affect children, but adults too

What is ADHD and ADD?

In the past, it was believed that both ADHD and ADD were some kind of "childhood disorder" that manifested itself primarily in problems with grades and behaviour at school or kindergarten. It seemed that this problem would go away on its own with the onset of adolescence.

We now know that many carry it into adulthood. Attention deficit disorder is caused by different functioning of the central nervous system, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. In this respect, the term 'difference' is really more appropriate than 'disorder'. ADHD or ADD does not adversely affect intelligence; on the contrary, those affected are often highly intelligent with higher levels of imagination and creativity.

ADHD and ADD manifest differently in adults, and many of the symptoms that are visible at first sight can be compensated for by the mature individual's reason. A person who has ADHD or ADD no longer runs around the room, falls out of his or her chair and fights with friends. However, he or she may exhibit the symptoms listed above, which interfere with his or her well-being, prevent full self-development, and often lead to self-depreciation, depression, anxiety, or increased vulnerability to addictive disorders.

Although this neurodevelopmental difference cannot be treated in the classical sense, modern therapies and medications can suppress the symptoms of ADHD and ADD to such an extent that they do not cause problems in everyday life and there is a significant shift in the quality of mental experience.

Treatment of ADHD and ADD

At the Adicare Clinic, we offer comprehensive care for attention disorders "under one roof". As already mentioned, the beginning of any effective therapy should be diagnosis. Specialized psychotherapeutic cognitive behavioral programs and cognitive short-term memory training are then the first choice method.

It is ideal to supplement the treatment with relaxation elements and strengthening of attention using the Mindfulness method. Therapy can also be supported by appropriate medication in justified cases. Of course, treatment of associated problems is also part of the therapy. In the case of addictions, the Controlled Alcohol Consumption programme has proved very useful.
