Psychodynamic psychotherapy

Psychodynamic therapy follows the principles of Freud's classical psychoanalysis. However, it is not so time-consuming, usually just one session a week, and the whole therapeutic process is usually shorter as well. Unlike classical psychoanalysis, it also deals with the client's present problems and interpersonal relationships. It belongs to what is known as depth therapy, that is, it sees the root cause of mental difficulties as being intrapsychic conflicts that take place at an unconscious level and therefore cannot be accessed naturally.

Principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy

Together with the therapist, the client explores his or her own psychological conflicts, of which he or she is usually unaware and thus defenseless. Therefore, it is important that the therapy emphasizes the awareness of emotions and fantasies, their expression and processing.

Within this psychotherapeutic method, the psychotherapist's main goal is for the client to understand the connection between his current emotional states and his personal history, to gain insight and understanding of how his own repetitive behaviour contributes to the stressful circumstances. It is important that he or she then gradually learns to change these destructive patterns.

Goals of psychodynamic psychotherapy

The aim of the psychodynamic process is to lead the client to be able to become aware of his/her inner needs and conflicts and thus gain more control over them. This will enable the client to live a freer life, to get rid of anxiety and depression, to cope much better with the demands of everyday life and to significantly increase the quality of his/her mental experience.
