Insomnia

Insomnia is technically referred to as sleep disorder, insomnia or hyposomnia. Insomnia is a common problem complained of by an increasing number of people. However, sleep disorders have many forms, causes and perpetuating factors. The most common are the inability to fall asleep, intermittent sleep, early awakenings without the ability to resume sleep, and sudden interruption of sleep with an anxiety attack. In the first place, a somatic origin of the difficulty must be ruled out; a common culprit is a specific breathing insufficiency called sleep apnoea. However, it is well established that the vast majority of sleep disorders are psychological in nature.

Sleep disorders

In therapy, it is often said that insomnia is just information about some other, sometimes unconscious, difficulty. Most often these are anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, stress or addictive disorders. Thus, he may distinguish between so-called "learned" or anxiety insomnia (usually an inability to fall asleep on time), depressive insomnia (long-term sleep deprivation), panic insomnia (sudden night wakings), stress insomnia (inability to fall asleep or stay asleep), and other sleep disorders.

Lack of sleep exhausts

Lack of sleep exhausts the body physically and mentally. It increases the intensity of anxiety and depression, lowers the threshold of resistance to stress, and the sufferer often suffers from what is known as anticipatory sleep anxiety, where insomnia is anticipated and feared in advance. All of these factors exacerbate the sleep disorder and the sufferer is literally caught in a vicious circle. A major problem for people suffering from sleep disorders is the risk of addiction to hypnotics (sleeping pills), alcohol and other addictive substances.

Treatment of insomnia

A prerequisite for the correct and effective treatment of insomnia is its accurate diagnosis. If insomnia is caused by psychological causes, psychotherapy is definitely the main treatment method. Depending on the type of disorder, one can choose between hypnotherapy blocks, cognitive-behavioural therapy, breathing strategy training and elements of Mindfulness. The psychotherapeutic process can also be supported by gentle, non-addictive medication. Medication for long-term use should definitely not be prescribed by a general practitioner but by a psychiatrist.
