Psychogenic overeating

A person who suffers from psychogenic overeating is definitely not a weakling or an uncontrolled indulger. The problem is much deeper. The trigger of an overeating attack is accumulated internal stress, which gradually causes tension in the person concerned, from which he subconsciously wants to escape at least for a while. However, he cannot cope with this problem on his own, because it is sometimes very difficult to discover the causes that lead to the accumulation of internal stress.

Is your relationship with food pathological?

  • Do you often find yourself consuming increased amounts of food, and the main reason is not simply the need to stave off hunger?
  • Do you alternate between excesses of overeating and periods when you are extremely strict with yourself when it comes to eating?
  • Have you tried many diets but after a while you return to your original habits?
  • Do you often feel remorse after eating?
  • Do you consume sweets to an increased extent and feel a sense of calm after eating them?
  • Do you dwell in your thoughts on food, its restriction, the number of calories each day?
  • Have you tried to "correct the transgression" of overconsumption by starving, vomiting or excessive exercise?

If you answered yes to three or more of the above questions, it is likely that your relationship with food is more or less pathological.

Food addiction

According to the International Classification of Diseases, food addiction is a serious psychological disorder, and unfortunately no dietary measures, basal metabolic rate measurements, appetite suppressant medications or excessive physical activity can help treat it. These interventions affect (more or less successfully, often unfortunately in the very short term) the consequences of the problem. If we manage to remove the psychogenic cause of overeating, weight adjustment occurs quite naturally and the results are sustainable in the long term.

Food addiction treatment

Food is an integral part of our lives, but it certainly should not play a central role in our spiritual experience and thus limit our inner freedom. In the treatment of addiction, we apply one of the most modern German psychotherapy programs of Professor Joachim Körkel, MD. The three-month outpatient treatment intervention is based on elements of humanistic psychology and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. In some cases, dialectical behavioural therapy or ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is also useful.

Compulsive overeating takes many forms and causes. Schedule a no-obligation diagnostic consultation. Together we will determine the specifics of your disorder, its severity and any associated difficulties (often an anxiety disorder). We will suggest a specific treatment approach and explain the basic features of the psychotherapeutic method we would use to treat your problem.
