Anorexia

Anorexia is an eating disorder that is highly dangerous as it can directly threaten the health and life of the sufferer. Therefore, we should not underestimate its initial manifestations. Unfortunately, anorexics are often characterised by a very low motivation for treatment. They are not aware of their problem or are in denial about it. The support of family and loved ones is therefore extremely important for the sufferer.

Causes of anorexia

There are several causes of anorexia or warning signs that our relationship with food is no longer okay. Some of the most common include bullying by classmates, loss of a safe environment due to, for example, a change of career, school or moving house, perfectionism in parenting and pressure to perform, an increased need for love and understanding, oppressive childhood compulsion to eat, sexual trauma, relationship trauma or a death in the family.

Treatment of anorexia

The causes of anorexia are certainly not solved by forcing, scaring, ordering and convincing that the person is too thin. Within the psychotherapeutic approach, we have very good experience with a comprehensive outpatient program that specializes specifically in the treatment of anorexia and focuses on the deep causes of the disease.

The sufferer needs to be helped to find an answer to the question of why the restriction means safety for him, what the internally exaggerated thinness actually means for him (not only aesthetically) and why his relationship with himself has been disturbed. Psychotherapeutic treatment can be supported by appropriate medication when warranted. The sooner we become aware of the tendency to anorexia and begin to address it, the better. The most severe forms of anorexia are indicated for long-term hospitalisation. Be sure not to stay alone with your affliction and do not let it grow!

Psychotherapy of anorexia

Just as no two people are the same, no two forms of anorexia are identical. If you want to learn more about your disease and its causes, book a no-obligation diagnostic consultation. We will determine the exact specifics of your problem, its severity and any associated difficulties. We will suggest a specific treatment procedure and explain the basic features of the psychotherapeutic method, which we will then use together to combat your affliction.
