Psychosomatic diseases

There is no doubt that our psychological states fundamentally affect the state of our body. In a healthy body is a healthy spirit. But the reverse is also true and we could reverse the ancient saying - a healthy spirit is a prerequisite for a healthy body. Psychosomatics is a very broad term and encompasses a wide range of difficulties. Some can be documented by some objective medical findings, but classical treatment works very little for them. For most of them, however, doctors are clueless and the cause is completely unclear.

Do you think you need help or at least want more clarity? Make an appointment for a no-obligation initial and diagnostic consultation or just give us a call, we will be happy to advise you and help you with everything.

Somatoform dysfunction

  • Headache, tremor or tingling in the limbs
  • Indigestion, wolf hunger, nausea or heartburn
  • Bloating, flatulence, frequent urging to pass stool or urinate
  • Blood pressure fluctuations, sweating
  • Back pain, neck muscle spasms
  • Feeling short of breath (unable to take a deep breath)
  • Insomnia, hiccups

Above, we have listed the psychosomatic difficulties that we encounter most often in practice. They are called somatoform autonomic dysfunctions. Doctors are not able to identify the somatic cause of these disorders and various examinations are usually negative. The patient is labelled as healthy, but may also feel like a hypochondriac and lose hope of improvement.

These difficulties have a common denominator and that is (often suppressed and thus unconscious) anxiety. Anxiety is actually fear at its core. Our body is unable to distinguish whether we are afraid of a real threat or of our own thoughts and catastrophic scenarios. It automatically triggers a defensive physiological stress response to prepare us for fight or flight.

The stress response is a complex physiological process, yet we can simplistically say that two basic changes occur during the stress response. The proportion of oxygen in the blood increases at the expense of carbon dioxide, and energy is transferred from the digestive tract to the muscles, where lactate is flushed out. This unmetabolized energy is the cause of very unpleasant and often literally agonizing bodily conditions. The pain experienced by the sufferer is real, it is just not physical but psychological.

Psychosomatic disorders with objective findings

  • Asthma, frequent respiratory infections, allergies
  • Rashes and eczema
  • Cardiovascular problems, carcinogenic diseases
  • Fatigue syndrome

It can be simplified to say that if the body is in a prolonged state of stress alert due to psychological stress, the whole organism is greatly exhausted. This is manifested not only by a reduction in the quality of psychological experience, but above all by immune disorders. The impaired defences of our body are the breeding ground for all these diseases and cause common health problems to become chronic.

Treatment of psychosomatic diseases

In all psychosomatic diseases, it is necessary first of all to reveal their causes and maintaining factors. Most often these are suppressed anxiety states, but of course also chronic mood disorders, stress disorders, personality disorders and many others. For somatoform autonomic dysfunctions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, supplemented with intensive practice of muscle and breathing strategies, works best. For other psychosomatic disorders, the psychotherapeutic method should be determined in relation to the type of problem, its causes and the personality of the client.
