Treatment of borderline personality disorder

In the psychotherapy of borderline personality disorder, the therapist maps the defence mechanisms and their maturity, the ability to regulate or dysregulate emotions and strengthens the overall emotional resilience of the personality. The focus is on analyzing and gradually changing the patterns and patterns of thinking and behavior that are typical of this personality disorder. It continuously strengthens the ability to regulate emotions together with the client. The specialised therapeutic programme also focuses on gradually increasing the ability to cope with stress and demands. With the support of the psychotherapist, the client changes his/her self-concept and view of other people and the world around him/her. He/she learns to handle life's obstacles constructively, better understand and regulate his/her emotions, strengthens the art of self-soothing and develops new strategies to solve problems.

Diagnosis of borderline personality disorder

Full-fledged treatment of borderline personality disorder should begin with a professional diagnosis. This is often more challenging in borderline personality disorder because the clinical picture of this disorder includes a variety of symptoms that are often mistaken for the main diagnosis.

Typically, the affected individual is then treated only symptomatically and the root cause of all problems is not addressed. Borderline disorder is then often confused with depression, anxiety disorder or addictive disorder. Of course, all of these manifestations may be present and need to be treated, but the main therapeutic focus should be on the core problem.

How is HPO diagnosed?

The psychological examination focuses primarily on confirming or refuting the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. The examination also includes the selection of an appropriate psychotherapeutic method and an explanation of its basic principles so that the client understands exactly how the therapeutic process will proceed. If the diagnosis of HPO is not confirmed, the diagnostic interview will also reveal the presence of any other disorder and a proposal for the optimal therapeutic approach.

The examination consists of two blocks and the client will spend two hours in the clinic. The examination starts with a diagnostic interview followed by a written part. The evaluation of the test by the psychologist and the writing of the final report takes 60 to 120 minutes. The report is sent by the diagnosing psychologist no later than 14 days after the first part of the examination. The examination can be followed up with one more hour of personal consultation, during which the client receives answers to all his/her questions and receives a tailor-made individual therapy plan in accordance with the diagnosis.

Misdiagnosis of borderline personality disorder

Just as borderline personality disorder can go unrecognised and sufferers rarely improve their condition, the diagnosis is sometimes overused. For example, when protracted or turbulent crises occur regularly in a relationship, and couples therapy should be the right answer, some individuals tend to label their partners as "borderline" and then absolve themselves of all responsibility for the relationship problem. Often all those who have problems with self-harm are also automatically labelled as borderline, but this can be a manifestation of many different psychological crises and does not necessarily indicate this diagnosis.

Comprehensive treatment of borderline personality disorder

Of course, treatment also includes treating the various symptoms of HPO, such as depression, self-harm, anxiety and addictive disorders. Practicing the Mindfulness method is also a very effective support for the therapeutic process. At the AdiCare clinic, the psychologists also work closely with our psychiatrists so that, if necessary, the psychotherapeutic process can be supported by gentle medication. Sometimes it is also necessary to revise existing inappropriate medication.
