Specific phobias

A specific phobia sometimes also called Isolated Phobia is an excessive, pathological fear of a particular object, activity or situation. People who suffer from one of the specific phobias realize that their fear is exaggerated and illogical. Nevertheless, they are unable to get rid of it and in some cases it limits their personal life or professional career.

Severe anxiety attack

When affected individuals are exposed to the feared object or situation, they often experience a dramatic psychological reaction with a strong physiological accompaniment (chest pain, increased heart rate and blood pressure, fainting sensation, etc.).

Common specific phobias include:

  • arachnophobia (fear of spiders)
  • claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
  • acrophobia (fear of heights)
  • aichmophobia (fear of needles and pointed objects) and many others
  • aviophobia (fear of flying)

Treatment of specific phobias

Great strides can be made in the treatment of specific phobias using cognitive behavioural therapy and exposure therapy in particular. One-off applications of gentle medication can also be used for a temporary period (often, for example, in the initial phase of audiophobia treatment).
